Learning can be divided into four stages of competence:

  1. Unconsciously unskilled
  2. Consciously unskilled
  3. Consciously skilled
  4. Unconsciously skilled.

For example: reading a book on a new topic is a way to go from unconsciously unskilled to consciously unskilled. Even if you have a good memory, you may reach consciously skilled in some situations.

What is the purpose of a Second Brain or a Bullet Journal?

In my opinion, these are methods that seek to lead you to consciously skilled. It is true that, indirectly, they help you reach unconsciously skilled but that is not their main objective.

What is the objective of the Zettelkasten method?

In my opinion, to get you to unconsciously skilled as quickly as possible. When you process a topic with the Zettelkasten method, you reach the point of atomizing all its ideas and clearly seeing how they connect to each other. But this doesn’t just happen inside your Zettelkasten, it also happens in your brain: working with a Zettelkasten is training to reach unconsciously skilled.
