Which license should I use for my first story?
I have doubts about which license to use for my first story.
The only thing that is really clear to me is that I want the PDF of the story to be freely shareable and redistributable by others.
This naturally leads me to use a Creative Commons license, but there are many variants depending on what rights I want to release.
The option that most appeals to me at the moment is CC BY 4.0:
“This license requires that reusers give credit to the creator. It allows reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format, even for commercial purposes.”
There are more restrictive variants that:
- force you to use the same license if you create a derivative of the work
- prevent you from creating derivatives of the original work
- prevent you from monetising the original work.
This all sounds great, but what I see is that ideas don’t work like that in reality. Everything can be copied, modified and commercialised without giving attribution to the author or asking permission.
And… I think it’s healthy for that to be the case.
But well, the discussion about intellectual property is a really deep topic and these are just «half-baked ideas» :-)
And you, which license would you recommend me to use?
